El Proyecto


The main objective of the project is to enhance the social networks of Syrian refugees in Thessaloniki by organizing in some facilities in the city during the summer a set of activities for children and by facilitating some social activities with elder people.

 This goal will be reached by implementing some derivated specific objectives:


 1.-Specific objective one is to develop social abilities of refugee children during their school holidays, increasing their capacity for working together, developing their responsibility and improving their skills for better profiting of the formal education.

 2.-Specific objective two is increase the communication between refugees in the city by promoting the creation of their own newspaper of similar media able to arrive to all the refugee families.

 3.-Specific objective three is to reinforce the autonomy and self-estimation of refugee women by giving them the opportunity for meeting in a specific place, without the presence of men, and developing there their own activities and networks.

 4.-Specific objective four is to improve the daily routine of refugees by organizing lessons about languages and other subjects that they can join freely and where they can meet with other people.

 5.-Specific objective five is to offer a space where they can meet and organize their own activities in order to increase self-initiative and community network.



Este proyecto ha sido diseñado y planificado teniendo en cuenta a los menores de entre 5 y 14 años en un centro de refugiados tipo de Grecia. Esto significa un promedio de población de entre 200 y 250 niños y niñas, en función del tamaño del centro.

Aunque la situación en Grecia resulta muy cambiante en lo que respecta a los campos de refugiados, los centros comienzan ya a ser estables. Están básicamente gestionados por el Gobierno griego con apoyo de grandes organizaciones no gubernamentales y cuentan con un promedio de población estable algo superior al millar de personas.

El centro concreto en el que este proyecto se pondrá en práctica está aún por concretar, a la espera del contacto y la interlocución con organizaciones no gubernamentales acreditadas que están ya sobre el terreno y las indicaciones de los gestores involucrados en la zona.



The objectives will be reached through five different activities, to be organized in a space rented with this purpose and accessible for all refugees.


a.- Activities for children

The educational problems of children living in refugee camps are somehow minimized now that they are living in the cities. However, some of the problems we had identified still remain now. Lack of self-discipline, agressivity and problems for working in common are still present in the children population.

Furthermore, Children are the most vulnerable group to the problems derived of refugee situation. The lack of stability, the anxious waiting for their departure to other countries and the poor living conditions may hamper in many ways their normal process of evolution and development. Additionally, some of them are still suffering some traumas created during the conflict in their home country and in the way escaping from it.

Taking all these questions into consideration, we have planned some informal educational activities. They should be attractive and interesting enough for children and young teenagers keeping coming during the entire holidays period. At the same time, they should offer the chance to work on it for developing the capacity of working together, the mutual support, the responsibility and the autonomy of children.

According to our experience, the most adequate activity is a creative workshop to be developed together with a theatre group. It will be organized daily separately for children in kindergarten age (5-8 years old) and older children (9-13 years old). The daily schedule will include a presentation, some music activities and games for facilitating children cooperation and time for making handicrafts and preparing the theatre performance.

Additionally, it would be possible to organize some outside games for children oriented to pull out energy by teaching them at the same time to improve their respect for rules and to reduce their agressivity.


b.- Media activities

A new problem for refugees outside the camp is the lack of feeling of community. Also, they have bigger problems to get any information, which increases extremely their stress and may make them anxious.

We think that this problem has to be put in relation with the lack of alternatives for teenagers which are not anymore in age of frequenting school. They need some alternative and are the perfect target population to be involved in the media activity. Our first task is to convince a significant group of teenagers for getting involved in the project and managing it.

A media system can be organized through a printed newspaper to be distributed among refugees, but also with other media more accessible by internet, which are cheaper in regard to it sustainability, and more immediate. Among these media there are internet newspaper, but also blogs, youtube channels, Instagram and twitter accounts, Telegram channels and others. The final decision about the format should be done according to the promoting group. We will keep some coordination about the final product, ensuring respect for tolerance and for true in all articles and publications. Also guarantying that the group works integrating all members and that information of public interest for all the community of refugees have priority to be disseminated.


c.-Activities for women

Women are the base of any social network. At the same time, refugee women suffer supplementary their situation, carrying often with the burden of a daily discrimination where they are not invited to take decisions but carry out all the work in the housekeeping.

The idea of having a group of women meeting in a space only for them –without any man being present- is extremely positive. The meetings will be organize with a constant “excuse”, like teaching English language, showing movies or giving make up lessons. However the main goal is that they can be together, interact and develop a social net. Thereby we will take special care of the atmosphere of these meetings, and act as mediators with this objective.

Depending of their interest and availability, we are ready to offer them also some small economic activity, such as sewing or knitting together and sharing the small benefits produced by it.


d.-Lessons and club

As far as refugees are waiting during months for to be sent to a new country, their routine is boring and mostly empty. Persons that were working in their home country find themselves now without many obligations and they hardly fill their days with any activity.

The key for the success of the community centre is that refugees join it. This requires a stable daily schedule of activities, keep with enough continuity. We will encourage refugees to organize their own activities, but also we will propose some ones. At less we will use the presence of our volunteers for providing language lessons and we will organize easy leisure activities as movie projections or conferences about subjects of their interest.



The main result foreseen is that Syrian refugees living currently in Thessaloniki will have a space for meeting were social activities for the entire community are regularly organized.


Specific result 1 is that a significant number of refugee children are attending during their school holidays educational activities where they develop they social skills and the mutual support.


Specific result 2 is that Syrian refugees in Thessaloniki have their own communication media, which is regularly produced and distributed and which includes information useful for the entire community.


Specific result 3 is that a group of refugee women is in place, meeting regularly in a space free of men and enjoying activities for them.


Specific result 4 is that a community centre is open daily for refugees to gather there. The centre has a stable schedule of activities; refugee participate in its management.

Terminar la selección de los voluntarios y dividirlos en los 4 períodos de trabajo.

Cuatro grupos de 8 voluntarios cada uno con habilidades y disponibilidad adecuadas.

Formación para los voluntarios.

25-26 de Junio

Los voluntarios disponen de suficientes herramientas y conocen los límites del proyecto.

En primer equipo llega a Grecia para arreglar el alojamiento para los voluntarios y la logística principal.

28 de junio

Contactos establecidos con los socios y las autoridades locales. Alquiler de local.
